Tree Planting

March 31, 2008

Planted 40 Silver Birch and 10 Japanese Maples along the top boundary and 40 Liquidambars along the east/south boundary. They all got a handful of organic fertilizer. The ground was teaming with worms. Lovely chocolate soil everywhere. Put a Pin Oak on the north/west boundary near the entrance.

Bought 171 plants from the Woodlea Tubestock Nursery for the boundary.
40 Betula Alba (Silver Birch)
10 Acer Palmatum (Japanese Maple)
1 Quercus Palustris (Pin Oak)
40 Nothofagus Cunninghammii (Tasmanian Myrtle Beech)
40 Liquidambar Styraciflua (Sweet Gum)
40 Acacia Melanoxylon (Blackwood)

March 2008 - Pests & Weeds

Blackberry - mainly along western boundary and in ornamental garden around the house. Dug some out, brushcut and mulched over.
Thistle - mainly in bottom paddock and popping up in small numbers in top paddocks. Slashed and brushcut. Will uproot it in top paddocks.
Stickyweed - ornamental gardens full of it. Pulled most of it out.

Compost 2008

Built a three bay compost system using hay bales. It’ not quite an engineering masterpiece, it’s all a bit wonky but I’m sure it’ll make good compost. It’ll probably just be the lazy gardeners cover and leave for a year system but if I’m feeling very energetic one day I’ll turn it.
